Part-Time Evening

The first part of the study-unit will provide educators with an introduction to the adult language learner and discuss the issues of assessment/placement and course/lesson organization. Teachers will be made aware of the specific characteristics and learning needs of migrants and will learn techniques for building community in the classroom. The second part of the study unit will provide activities designed for students at various levels that are organized thematically around topics such as family, food, and work which are useful for teaching Maltese for integration.

Study-unit Aims

  • To address the needs of teachers working with adult migrants studying Maltese;
  • To provide a useful overview of the principles involved in teaching Maltese for integration to adult migrant learners as well as a wealth of activities and resources specifically designed for adult migrant learners;
  • To present teachers with the latest teaching and learning methodologies and approaches that can be integrated into the adult migrant learners' classroom;
  • To support educators in developing their skills and expertise in the field of teaching Maltese as a Foreign Language in light of the Malta National 2020 Integration Strategy.

Learning Outcomes: Knowledge and Understanding

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

  1. Relate to specific learning needs and characteristics of adult migrant learners;
  2. Describe and critically appraise, foundation theories on first and second language acquisition;
  3. Recognise the role of the educator at each level of the Maltese for integration teaching and learning process;
  4. Relate to documentation in relation to the teaching of Maltese for integration, such as the Malta Integration Strategy 2020 and the I Belong Programme syllabus.

Learning Outcomes: Skills

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

  1. Employ translanguaging and intercomprehension strategies with migrant learners of Maltese as a Foreign Language;
  2. Design and present samples of lesson plans based on an identified set of learning outcomes for teaching Maltese for integration;
  3. Employ effective teaching methodologies and approaches to be used in teaching Maltese for integration;
  4. Select and employ appropriate assessment tools and techniques in order to check whether learners have achieved the desired learning outcomes.
